1. Give Yourself Enough Time

No matter how stressed you might feel, give yourself plenty of time to pack up and move. Overestimate if you have to, however much that may make you feel better.

We tend to overestimate how much we can do in a day and underestimate how much we can accomplish over several weeks. Which ends up backfiring on us the day before as we stress throughout the process. It can get hectic when something unexpected happens or is uncovered during the move.

Do yourself a great favour and leave some breathing space in your scheduling. Future you will give a big sigh of relief and thank you!

2. Stay Organized (With This Organization System)

It seems silly to organize for a move when it should be as simple as putting stuff in boxes and shipping them out in vehicles. But let’s get real and specific here: label your boxes, prioritize your essentials, and use a list! That way, you can know what is going on and whether something is missed or not.

The best idea to stay organized is to pop open a Google spreadsheet or doc and write

everything down. (And we do mean everything!). And if you need a checklist for this, Canada Post has a great moving list for you to print out or copy and paste into a Google doc. Another great idea is to number your boxes. You can then write them down into your virtual document and include a brief description. That way, if you notice a box is missing, you can cross-reference and know what is missing. That way, if a box number is missing, you know what is inside.

Don’t forget about your furniture!

3. Hire Professional Movers

If push comes to shove and you find yourself in a crunch for time or in need of the peace of mind, professional movers can alleviate a tremendous amount of stress.

Professional movers are not just muscles to take care of the physical strains of moving. They are qualified and experienced professionals that can coordinate with you and your moving schedule, move awkward, large, and heavy furniture items safely and with care, and assist you in finding the right people, such as arranging a rental moving truck and/or packing services. Although the idea of spending money on moving can cause most people to flinch, it is an option worth considering if you want your move to be done promptly, done efficiently, and done right the first time.

4. Get More Sleep Than You Need!

Sleep is something we tend to take for granted. It is just too darn easy to stay up and finish whatever we start. That is why your sleep schedule must be prioritized and scheduled in your calendar during the moving process. Give yourself enough buffer throughout the days and weeks leading up to the big move. You want to feel well-rested as you transition from one location to the next. Not only that, sleep will provide you the rest for the emotional control and mental fortitude to get through this potentially stressful transition. So sleep well and take care of yourself first! Wrapping Things Up (And Shipping It Out) So there we have it! Four essential tips on lowering your stress levels when moving. What we wrote above might seem easy to do, but they are equally easy to forget. Following them carefully. Reread it twice. Bookmark this page if you have to!
